Out and about in South Dakota

I left Sioux Falls early, bound for the Highmore Senior Center and a “meet and greet” event. When I walked in to the Center, the first lady I met in the kitchen said “you are taller than you look on TV!” We had a great group of folks from 11 to 12, hosted by Nic Nemec and Natalie Alley. From there I went to the lunch meeting of the Oahe District of the county officials. I had the chance to address the group and we spoke about our crumbling infrastructure and the challenges we face due to the mismanagement of our state budget. From Highmore I went up to Faulkton to call on Jim and Jody Moritz, who run the Faulk County Record. Jim was hard at work due to deadlines, and Jody was continuing her labor of love, the restoration of Congressman Pickler’s Mansion on the south side of town. Jody gave me a tour of the Pink Palace. It is chock full of history. Jody’s son Garrick even took my picture in Congressman Pickler’s favorite reading chair, one with dog’s heads carved into the arm rests. From Faulkton I went west to Gettysburg to visit with Molly McRoberts at the Gettysburg paper, and then on the Onida where I was lucky enough to have my picture taken holding the Onida Watchman in front of the paper. That newspaper has a long tradition of having people pictured, reading the Watchman in unusual places. We subscribed to the Watchman when I was growing up in Miller as my Dad represented Sully County for a time in the Senate. We always looked for the picture of the person reading the Watchman in out-of-the-way places. We were to have a debate this morning in Pierre before the School Superintendents but it had to be rescheduled at the last minute, so I headed back to Sioux Falls. Before I left ONida, though, I stopped at Stahl’s Sinclair, where Mr. Stahl himself pumped the gas, cleaned my windshield, and gave me his two cents ‘ worth about the day’s events. I love this state!
